O'Neil auditioned for Canadian Idol's third season in early 2005, while she was still a high school student. The quality of her singing impressed panel of judges and she was promoted to an audition in the 100th place. O'Neil was given high marks by the judges. She suffered major defeats in the Top 10 week and Top 9 week of the finals. She was placed in the bottom three, as well as the second place. The judges were surprised by her performance, and recommended viewers to select those who sing well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil's performance was always top-quality that he did not fall into the bottom 3. The judge Werner predicted, after two more stunning performances that O'Neil would be the winner in the Canadian Idol competition, as she would be the first woman and the youngest contestant in history, following the September 7 Finals of 2005. O'Neil was promptly congratulated by Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
